Tips and How-To’s As one of the oldest and most widely recognized brands in music, Gibson has crafted some of the most cherished and valuable instruments of all time. Determining exactly when your Gibson specimen was made can have high stakes attached to it. A difference of only one year – sometimes even several months – can mean a four-figure difference in value. Our hope is to make the dating process and, in turn, the valuation as easy, accurate and transparent as possible. You should be able to use this guide to determine the year of your instrument and then consult the Reverb Price Guide to find its value, all for free. Methods For Dating a Gibson Instrument For many vintage instruments, determining the date of manufacture involves little more than running the serial number through a reference guide. Whereas Martin guitars have been using a single, consistent numbering system since the 19th century, Gibson has used several different serial number formats since its inception in , meaning that some formats and numbers overlap across decades.

Oct 06, · I am looking for a copy of an article from Audio Magazine in about April plus or minus a couple of years. It was an April Fools article describing, as I recall, a new type of audio recording with lasers, predating the CD era.
F is the production factory which stands for Fujigen. The first digit will be the last digit of the year, ie. The last 5 numbers will be the consecutive number denoting production count for the year with the caveat that each month will start at predetermined intervals of or , etc. Presently it is set at These serial numbers are usually quite different from the MIJ numbers, have many extra digits because of the enormous volume of guitars produced, and I am not familiar enough with any of them to tell you how to figure out the dating.
Cort Serial Numbers – Cort serial numbers are denoted with a C prefix followed by either 7 or 8 digits. I’m not sure what year the changeover occurred but using the formula it will be easy for you to tell. The letter denotes year, starting in with A, with a 5 digit production number.

Was never able to use it on stage because it was far too bassy but used it on Stand Up on Nothing is Easy. I loved the shape of it and, switching from an Airline, I liked the shorter scale neck. I played it through an Acoustic , which seemed to be the biggest bottom most road durable amp of it’s day – Dennis Dunaway, Alice Cooper The difference between the EBO and the EB3 was the extra pickup and associated electronics in the bridge position on the EB3.
Both used the same materials, mahogany bodies and necks maple necked from with rosewood and occasionally ebony fingerboards. During much of the production run, the EB0 had a 3-ply pickguard b-w-b whilst the EB3s had 5-ply b-w-b-w-b. Strengths Short scale, mahogany throughout and the unique Gibson EB humbucker made for a quick playing bass with a heavy heavy sound.

F-Spacing, Standard Spacing Why are there two different spacings? A long time ago in the 20th century, actually the electric guitar world was divided between Gibson and Fender designs. One of the differences between the two was string spacing. In general, Gibson chose a narrower string spacing at the bridge than Fender, and therefore the polepieces on Gibson humbuckers were closer together than the magnets on Fender pickups.
Our first humbuckers followed the original Gibson spacing, and we call them standard-spaced. When we released our first humbuckers with wider spacing, Floyd Rose bridges were very popular. Floyd string-spacing is the same as Fender spacing, so we naturally called the new pickups F-spaced. F-spacing refers to the wider of the two spacings. For proper string alignment and balanced output, F-spaced humbuckers should be used in the bridge position on all guitars with string spacing at the bridge of 2.

All numbers were impressed into the wood and a six digit number assigned, though no particular order was given and some instruments had a letter prefix. The orange labels inside hollow bodied instruments was discontinued in and were replaced by white and orange rectangle labels on the acoustics, and small black, purple and white rectangle labels were placed on electric models.
A few bolt on neck instruments had a date ink stamped on the heel area.
My Rick had the serial number in the end of the tuning piece; stock or whatever it’s called. It was like B or whatever. I’m told when the strings go thro’ the actual guitar body not a chrome endplate it is prewar. The width of the pickup is another indicator. Early models had a little octagon shaped knob for the volume control; flat in shape.

My S1 Soprano repaired bridge Orville Gibson started making Mandolins with a carved, arched solid wood top and back, prior to this, Mandolins had a flat solid wood top and a slatted bowl-like back , in Orville died in and Lloyd Loar became the chief luthier for the company in his place. It was rescued by the current owners and is currently an independent Guitar maker. Gibson don’t currently have Ukuleles in their catalogue but from through to they made some of the worlds finest Ukuleles and Banjoleles.
These are very sought after and command a very high price when they come up for sale. The exception to the current lack of production, is Gibson currently own the Epiphone brand and they currently do produce a couple of Ukulele’s. However since this is already a very long entry I have a made a separate one for them. Epiphone also had a long history of Banjolele manufacture before Gibson took them over so there is another entry for the Epiphone’s more historic offerings. And while on the topic of famous historic names Gibson currently own, there is also Dobro and Slingerland but as they are not being used for any Ukulele branding currently, though they were before Gibson took them over, both of these get their own entries too.
Like Martin , who at one stage Gibson considered buying from and rebranding – but never did , Gibson produced different levels of decoration. Usually there were 3 levels for Ukuleles but this was all much less rigid that Martins with, in some catalogues, the better one just being called “Deluxe”. Usually the type 1 just has a ring around the sound hole, the type 2 has some edge binding as well as the sound hole ring , and the type 3 or deluxe would have extras like headstock motifs, extended 17 fret fretboards, or fancy fret markers.
Due to the infrequent batch nature of building there is a lot of variation in the actual builds of the Ukulele itself.
That could be, it was in Clinton Iowa. It says MOD on the back. I know nothing about this pickup so any info you can share will be much appreciated.

Tweet Gibson USA’s lineup of electric guitars finds the sweet spot between tradition and innovation Gibson just lifted the tent flap on its new electric guitar offerings and early indications point to as a banner year for the brand. And Gibson is also giving some of its more exotic models facelifts in the coming year. A lot of work goes into the neck carve and fretwork of the Les Paul Faded T to evoke that sense of a seasoned and familiar instrument that fits you like the proverbial glove.
The Mahogany slim taper neck is a nod to modern shredders while modern R and T humbuckers exploit all the tonal goodness and resonance churned out by the weight-relieved body. The faded finish underscores the sense of holding a veteran axe. The gloss finish gets a carefully applied treatment giving it a convincingly worn appearance. Ditto the nickel-plated hardware and that old-friend feel when you first grasp the slim-taper neck and run your fingers down the nicely finished and polished frets.
Modern Gibson R Neck and T Bridge humbuckers crank the output necessary for contemporary music contexts while the weight-relieved body is a shoulder and back-friendly update. But the modern neck profile and modern humbuckers are all about achieving maximum playability and tone. As with the other guitars detailed thus far, you also get a padded gig bag plus strap and polishing cloth.

The LPJ is a notch above an Epiphone in the grown-up guitar stakes, but it’s pretty far removed from the look of the Goldtops and Bursts that generate tremors in the nether regions of guitar nerds. We always feel a little nervous when dragging a set-neck guitar around in a gigbag. We’d recommend investing in a hard shell case for any guitar with a glue-in neck and a back-angled headstock, but nevertheless the supplied Gibson gigbag is robust.

With all the fat, sweet, snarling Les Paul tone that purists love, the Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro IV sports a mahogany body with a thick maple cap for the perfect blend of warmth and clarity. The top is finished in high-gloss lacquer, while the back, sides and neck have a smooth satin finish that feels great and lets the wood resonate fully. Period-Correct Pickguard The cream-colored pickguard has been a Les Paul staple dating back to the models of the late s and the early s.
Many players, however, removed the pickguard from their Les Pauls to show off the beauty of the flame maple tops, prompting Gibson to stop installing the pickguard altogether. During the s and s, Gibson began reinstalling the pickguard in the factory, and the Les Pauls from this era once again arrived in stores bearing the classic, cream-colored pickguard. These new pickups feature nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers and 4-conductor braided wiring.
The user-adjustable 10dB boost circuit injects added power and frequency range for solos, single-note picking and dirty chording depending on amp settings and features true-bypass that disengages the boost completely, ensuring pure passive Les Paul tone. Revolutionary Plek Set Up The Plek is a German-made, computer-controlled machine that carefully measures each fret, along with the fingerboard height under each string, and then automatically dresses each fret to tolerances within.
This pioneering process does in minutes what it takes a luthier several hours—sometimes even days—to accomplish. Every fret is accurately aligned, and the guitar is properly intonated, leaving the instrument “Plek’d” and amazingly playable. Antique Binding To see the process of putting the binding on the Les Paul Traditional is to really appreciate the effort and attention that Gibson puts into each instrument.
A lone craftsman will carefully glue and fit two pieces of binding around the entire body of a Les Paul.
